We are experimenting a lot with our VR Touch with object manipulation in Virtual Reality.
We developed an interaction scenario with a virtual object performed through the Leap Motion hand tracking. We compare the interaction strategies between the hand and the object with or without our wearable VR Touch.
Leap Motion Only
The tracking of the Leap Motion works well in a controlled environment. The interaction with virtual object is performed with the interaction engine, which is a sort of “gluing” of the object to the fingers while they are in the object active area. The system works, but the absence of a touch feedback from the virtual object generates an imprecise contact, and unnatural interaction strategies.
Leap Motion + VR Touch
When we wear just 1 VR Touch on the index finger, the interaction with the VR changes drastically. The real touch haptics sensation associated to the index finger generates a realistic touch feedback of the virtual object. This leads to a precise index contact on the virtual object, and the implementation of natural interaction strategies in Virtual Reality.
